Nicki Minaj is to Trinidad and Tobago what Rihanna is to Barbados- the international billboard of a territory, while mainly renowned for Calypso and Soca, has always been dubbed the iconic rapper’s birthplace. Controversial skepticism over her representation over the years, has never ceased to litter social media, but there are thousands the world over who salute Nicki for her brazen theatrics and hardcore cultural embodiment.
When she visited Trinidad and Tobago to shoot her video for “Pound The Alarm”, Minaj was applauded for the decision by many Trinbagonians. There seemed to have been an outpouring of love for the chart topping rapper but in the aftermath, and since that time, Minaj’s loyalty to T&T has been questioned by some naysayers. Fact remains, while tons of celebs have made it to local shores for the annual Carnival celebration – superstars like Lil Kim, Dule Hill, Chilli, stars of Love and Hip Hop and countless others, Minaj is yet to make her presence felt.
Last week, Nicki announced plans to make her exit from the spotlight, stepping down from her rap throne to start a family with beau, Kenny Petty. The pair is said to be planning a wedding for before Thanksgiving this year. In the aftermath of the announcement via social media, she began posting visuals of some of her best moments in her 12 -year- long music career. One of the images was the video for ‘Pound The Alarm’ posted in celebration of Trinidad and Tobago’s 57th Independence on August 31st. It was beneath a subsequent photo of Minaj donning the Trinidad and Tobago national colours that the superstar entertainer said T&T would be seeing her sooner than they thought!
